Sri Lanka is a beautiful hot, tropical country, safe and family friendly, only a short flight from Dubaï, 4h15. It was easy to travel around and a great destination to for a first holiday with our Charlie. Everyone was so friendly there, we didn’t meet one person that was not nice! Sri Lankan are adorable, helpful and so smiley!
Sri Lanka was more modern than what I expected. I thought it would be like India as I travelled there years ago and it was quite rough but Sri Lanka was completely different.
A few things I didn’t know before going to Sri Lanka:
That was definitely our FAVOURITE ! Dalawella beach is more secluded and beautiful than the popular Unawatuna and it has a natural lagoon to swim in. We stayed at Sri Gemunu Resort and It was just perfect, the view from our room (number 2) was absolutely stunning! We were facing THE big rock, everyone was trying to climb on it risking their life “just for the gram” and it was hilarious to watch. The hotel was really affordable and comfortable too!
On Dalawella beach the best place to eat or have a drink is Wijaya beach, you can watch the sunset, have pizza, great cocktails, music and an amazing view! There was also a tiny restaurant/bar right next to our hotel, just on the left facing the sea, it felt like we were sitting on the waves watching the huge tortoises swimming and the pancakes were delicious!!
The famous Insta swing was next to the hotel just 100m on the beach to the right facing the sea. Expect to pay 500 to get on the swing and I have to say, it was really scary! I screamed like a baby !
We went to Unawatuna one evening and had diner at King Fisher, apparently the best restaurant in town and it was delicious. Come early as they start to serve from 7pm and it gets busy quickly.
After we stayed 5 days at Good vibes villa in the jungle 15 minutes from Dalawella, Unawatuna and Galle. The place was amazing with lots of wildlife and a stunning infinite pool. They have 6 rooms and 2 huge private villas. We stayed at the Coconut Villa with 2 bedrooms, a living room and an outside bathroom! Super luxurious and peaceful ! The villas are down two long stairs and a footpath so with a baby I’d recommend to stay in the rooms next to the pool. Also be aware if you’re looking for a party hotel this is not the place. You need to tell them in the morning if you will eat there for lunch and if you will be there for diner. The food was really nice though, loved their breakfast, fried rice and pasta bolognese and the staff was really friendly! I also had a massage and it was just amazing!
We went to Galle to see the Dutch fort but actually walking in the narrow streets was the best, lots of little shops and restaurants. We stopped at @thebungalowgallefort for coffee, great place!
After Dalawella we stayed in Mirissa for 5 days. Another beautiful beach with lots of restaurants to chose from and where you can just chill on the beach, sunbeds are free in most places. A lot bigger and busier than Dalawella. We stayed at Ocean Reach hotel which is great if you are on a budget, owned by a friendly family and central but not ideal with a baby as we had to cross the road to get to the beach.
I would recommend to stay at Number one Mirissa which is a beautiful hotel at the end of the bay with the best view on the beach, we spent New Year’s Eve there and it was just wonderful ! You could also stay at Paradise beach hotel: very central, with a pool, showers...
We loved to have lunch at Big belly, so cheap and delicious. Try the chicken fried noodles and rotis .
We had diner a few times at Salt they have great food, music and and desserts! Brizo beach club go for sunset and try the fish platter! Also loved the cocktails at Kama mirissa.
If you stay in Mirissa make sure you go to:
We stayed in Hotel Pinnalanda just for one night and it was perfect. The view was absolutely amazing, like a dream to see all the elephants from our balcony. They come at 8:30 am and then 40/50 more elephants at 10 am. Our balcony was shared with 2 other rooms, not private but massive, we had breakfast at the restaurant then sat on the table outside our room, waiting for the elephants to arrive, we had a coffee and enjoyed the view the whole day. The elephants came back at 2pm. We fed them, saw them playing, kissing, watched them having a bath. The river and landscape is absolutely stunning there. Sunset was so pretty and we saw hundreds of bats flying in the sky. Just Magical!
